Vandal Base

Daniel „Hank“ Wunn and Julian „Clyde“ Fricke, friends from child days on, cupeled up, to form a manifested duo, breaking the clean rules and visions one would imagine in their „cocktail“ of architecture, typography, abstract paintings and vandalism.

In their complex layered paintings the viewer often gets the feeling of seeing a short „screenshot“ before the colorful composition collapses under all the pilled up references to urban art, commercials and the society around a creative class“

The working process of the duo often looks like an intense battle of believes and technique, what surprisingly ends in an almost calm, confident and reserved composition, where the viewer will not be able to find the two sides but rather the perfect disaster of a duo clashing.

In the end the viewer always finds references to the own urban surrounding of the city, as well as art historian beliefs and views, mixed up with the urge to paint.

If you see works of the duo, you never get the feeling of pressure or a force to success, it is more a huge playground, that these two grown up`s attend in a repetitive manner.

„It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academicism. There is no such thing as good painting about nothing.“
-Mark Rothko
